WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The first game of the season is exciting for any team, but it was a little extra special for the Mount Greylock girls' soccer squad, which quickly found its offensive touch in a 5-0 home win over Saint Joseph's on Monday.

The Mounties started off strong, using a booming punt by senior goalie Margot Besnard to score its first goal of the season less than 10 minutes into the game. Classmate Alex Majetich slipped behind the Crusaders' defense to grab Besnard's booming kick and beat St. Joe's keeper Kendall Smith (16 saves) to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Tom Ostheimer's club scored two more goals before the end of the first half, one by sophomore Kelsey Orpin in the 26th minute and another by senior Alexandra DeVeaux with five and a half minutes left before the break.

"After a longer than usual preseason, this was a great start for the girls," Ostheimer said. "We look forward to continuing our offensive production against Lee on Thursday."

Orpin added her second unassisted goal of the game in the 52nd minute. Sophie Leamon then closed out the scoring for Greylock, finishing off a pass from junior Miranda Bucky five minutes later.

Led by the play of senior Alexa Adams, the Mounties' defense made sure the duo of Besnard and freshman Charlotte Rand didn't have to work too hard to combine for the team's first shutout of the year. Besnard made a pair of saves in the first half before Rand closed out the game by making one stop after halftime.

Greylock next plays at the Wildcats at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.
