Due to weather, it was a slow start to the high school track season in Berkshire County, and with the post-season rapidly approaching, this week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the Week are poised to make some noise.

Pittsfield's Kieran Coscia has been the top thrower in the county this spring with area-leading marks in the shot put (54 feet, 2-1/2 inches), discus (152-3) and javelin (154-10).

Last week, he again swept all three events in a double-dual meet against Hoosac Valley and Wahconah.

Two of those marks, in the shot put and the discus, would have set meet records last year at the Central/Western Massachusetts Division 1 Championships, where Coscia placed second in the discus with a mark of 135-10.

This spring Coscia, who is bound for Bucknell in the fall to play Division I FCS football, proved himself outside the county by finishing second in the shot and third in the discus in a multi-state meet in Rotterdam, N.Y.

Lenox's Mary Elliot also placed in that April 23 meet at Mohonasen High School in New York's Capital District.

She finished second in the 400 meters there in a time of 1:00.66 that still leads the county.

Elliot also has Berkshire County's best time in the 800 this spring, hitting the finish line in 2:27.11 at Monument Mountain five days later.

She was second in the 400 at last year's sectional meet in a time of 57.97 that beat the meet record coming into the competition, and the 800 time she ran on April 28 in Great Barrington would have medaled last year at Central/Wetern Mass.

Elliot's fastest 100 this spring, 13.34, is a mere hundredth of a second behind the 13.33 Wahconah's Aryianna Garceau ran last week in Great Barrington, setting the stage for a showdown on Saturday at the Berkshire County Individual Championships at Williams College.

Saturday will mark the start of the post-season for track and field, with just the PVIAC Championships on May 21 and the newly configured MIAA Divisional meets the following weekend.

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Southwestern Vermont Health Care.
