LENOX, Mass. -- The Lenox girls soccer team Monday scored in the game’s first minute en route to a 4-1 win over Hopkins in the quarter-finals of the Western Massachusetts Division 4 tournament.

“Julie Pehlert put the corner kick into a great spot in the 18, and Nicole Gamberoni was able to lay the ball off to Abby Schilling at the top of the 18 who was fortunately able to convert and give us an early lead,” Lenox coach Kyle Zinchuk said.

Hopkins rallied to tie the game in the 12th minute, but Shelby Lynch set up Tova Brown for the go-ahead goal late in the first half.

“Outside of that goal, our defense did a very good job of containing Hopkins' attack, and our midfield was able to keep possession and create chances through great movement off the ball and quick passing,” Zinchuk said. :Fortunately this paid off toward the end of the second half as Tova Brown was able to take a powerful shot from about 25 yards out that was over the keeper's head but stayed below the crossbar.”

In the second half, Jackie Hathaway scored with help from Gamberoni, and Brown set up Lynch for an insurance goal.

Shannon Meisberger made seven saves to earn the win in goal for fourth-seeded Lenox (12-5-2), which advances to face No. 1 seed Monson (19-0) in Wednesday’s semi-final at South Hadley High School.
