Big First Half Sets the Tone for Greylock

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Mount Greylock girls' soccer team got off to a quick start in what is likely to a be pivotal week in the Mounties' quest to repeat as South Division champions.

Greylock scored three goals in the first half against Drury on Tuesday, setting the tone in a 4-2 win on the road. It's just the first of four league matches this week for the Mounties, who are tied atop the South Division standings with Hoosac Valley. Greylock (7-3-3) has two games against Mount Everett this week, one on Wednesday and one on Friday, before what could be a winner-take-all matchup with the Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Sophie Leamon got the visitors going on Tuesday, scoring her third goal in the past two games off of a nifty feed from Alex Majetich in the 18th minute of play. The senior captain then converted a penalty kick six minutes later before an unassisted goal by sophomore Kelsey Orpin in the 32nd minute gave the Mounties a 3-0 lead at the break.

"We played our best 40 minutes of soccer in the first half," Greylock head coach Tom Ostheimer said. "The first goal by Sophie was assisted by a great flick off the head of Alex. That really go our offense into high gear, allowing us to jump out to a 3-0 halftime lead."

The Blue Devils (3-9-1), who lost their second straight game to a North County rival in as many days, controlled the second half, receiving goals from seniors Danielle Racette and Chelsea DeGroff. Mounties freshman Melissa Swann added an insurance goal in between those two strikes, however, giving Greylock the cushion it needed to pull off the win.

Senior Margot Besnard made five saves in goal for the Mounties before giving way to freshman Charlotte Rand, who made one stop in relief. Ali Tatro made six saves in a losing effort for Drury, which next plays at St. Joe's at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Greylock plays its first game against Mount Everett on the road at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
