NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Drury and Hoosac Valley girls soccer teams closed out their seasons Wednesday afternoon in soaking wet rivalry battle.

 

Four second half goals led to a 4-1 Hurricane win at Drury High School.

 

The Devils opened the scoring three minutes into the first half when sophomore Aubrey Rumbolt sent a pass to junior Jill Jietgens, who put the ball in the back of the net giving Drury the early 1-0 lead.

 

The wet conditions made for a very slippery game, but the Hoosac girls were able to control the ball in Drury’s defensive end the remainder of the first half. 

 

“We had some good shots on net, but we weren't really following them through,” Hoosac coach Kristin Holmgren said. “So going into the second half we decided to keep the ball on the ground, play everything to feet, and support everybody.”

 

Holmgren’s plan for her team worked coming out in the second half; Cali Romaniak tied things up five minutes in off an unassisted goal.

 

Drury did not let down; it continued pushing the ball out of its defensive end and sending balls up the field, but its speed up front wasn’t quick enough for Hoosac's defenders.

 

“There were a few breakdowns in the second half,” Drury coach Maryjane Rumbolt said. “We were really tired, but they still worked hard and still continued to move the ball around.”

 

Hoosac was able to capitalize on those few break downs that the Devils did have in the second half; putting in three more goals to give them the 4-1 win.

 

Fallon Field found the back of the net in the 19th minute to break the 1-1 tie; from there Hoosac kept sending the ball up the field. The Devils' defense did a stellar job pushing things out, but a few of their breakdowns led to two late goals.

 

In the final two minutes of the game Ellie Field put one in off a pass from Marissa Felter; a minute later Felter was able to find a hole in the Drury defense and carry the ball into the net leaving the final score at 4-1.

 

“The girls stepped up a lot,” Rumbolt said. “We’ve come so far from the beginning of the season.”

 

Both Rumbolt and Holmgren closed out their first season as coaches Wednesday afternoon. Both are confident in the improvements of their team this season and looking forward to next season.

 

“It was an adjustment year,” Holmgren said. “But I have to say, I’m really proud of them; we played really well in every game.”

 

“You’ve got to learn how to lose properly before you can win, so now we can go into next year and we have a lot of people who know what’s going on, we have a really good base to work on. It was a learning experience for me and them as well.”

 

Hoosac finished the season with a record of 6-10; they will be losing seven seniors from the squad. Drury will be sending off two seniors after finishing the season 4-12-1.
