CHESHIRE, Mass. - The Hoosac Valley girls soccer team (1-1) Monday secured its first win of the season, edging the Mount Greylock Mounties (1-2), 3-2.
Carah Cote scored twice, and Madison Graves scored once for the Hurricanes, while Caroline Flynn and Madison Ross converted for the Mounties.
"This was a fun league game," Hoosac coach Kathy Budaj said. :Both teams battled hard. Carah had some great shots on net, and it was nice to see her hard work pay off.
"Overall we played well. Our defense held strong when being pressured by Mount Greylock. There were many players today for us who may not have scored or assisted, but the reason the goal happened was because of their great plays that led up to the goals."
The first half featured well-played soccer from both teams. Neither the Hurricanes nor Mounties could establish dominant possession time as the teams exchanged the ball in the middle of the field and multiple attempts on net.
It wasn't until the 15th minute when Madison Graves took advantage of a loose ball in front of the Greylock goal and scored the first goal of the game for the Hurricanes.
The Mounties were able to keep pace when Flynn scored Greylock’s first goal. The next goal was scored by Hoosac’s Carah Cody in the 37th minute for her first of the game and Hoosac’s second. The first half finished with Hoosac up, 2-1.
The second half started with a quick Greylock goal when a corner kick attempt was successfully converted to tie the game once again.
Then in the 30th minute, Cote scored her second goal of the night giving the Hurricanes the lead again. The game got dramatic in the late game when the Mounties were given a corner kick with three minutes to play. Unfortunately for the Mounties the attempt went unanswered and the game finished.
Hoosac will travels to Wahconah on Saturday. Mount Greylock will have a home game against Wahconah on Wednesday.
