WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Madison Ross took home a gold medal and two second-place finishes, and her Mount Greylock teammates won the mile relay to close the meet as the Mounties placed second at the Central/Western Massachusetts Division 2 Championships at Westfield State University.

Ross won the long jump in 18 feet, 4-½ inches and placed second in the triple jump and high jump.

“My mark was great, so that was really good,” Ross said of her long jump performance. “And I was really excited. I was just nervous, though, going back and forth. I had to go from high jump to long jump to high jump.

“But it worked out, and I got a PR.”

In the long jump, she beat the field by 3 inches. In the triple jump, she finished 1-¼ inches behind Oakmont’s Alyssa Madden, who won with a mark of 37-3-¾.

In the high jump, Ross cleared 5-2. Winner Lindsay Marjanski cleared 5-4 to lead the Tigers to a first-place finish.

“I was ready,” Ross said. “When I got up I was excited, and I just couldn’t wait to get here and compete.”

Berkshire County’s only other individual champion also came in the jumps, where Taconic’s Josh Tayi won the high jump, clearing 6-0.

In the team competitions, South Hadley’s girls finished with 86 points. Mount Greylock amassed 73 points to finish second in the 44-team field.

The boys title went to Murdock of Winchendon with 56 points. The top Western Mass finisher was Putnam Voc (29 points) in fifth place; the top Berkshire County finisher, Wahconah, finished with 25 points highlighted Saturday by a third-place finish in the 4-by-400.

The quartet of Easton Eberwein, Jack Pudlo, Tyler Olds and PJ Pharmer closed the meet with a time of 3 minutes, 35.91 seconds to finish third in an event won by Murdock in 3:32.82.

In the girls’ 4-by-400, Mount Greylock’s Jacqueline Wells, Maggie Nichols (a seventh-grader), Elizabeth Dupras and Sophia Mele finished in 4:10.25, taking nearly five seconds off their seed time and edging runner-up Advanced Math and Science Academy (4:11.73).

In addition to Ross’ performance in the jumps, Mount Greylock got strong individual performances from Caroline Hadley and Maddie Albert. Hadley was the runner-up in the discus with a throw of 110 flat.

Albert placed second in the 800 meters (2:20.23) and third in the 400 hurdles (1:07.12).

Mele, in addition to running in the winning 4-by-400 quartet, placed fourth in the 400 (1:01.40) and ran a leg on the Mounties’ sixth-place 4-by-100 relay.

Taconic’s girls earned a top 20 finish in the team competition and were the second-best Berkshire County school, placing 16th.

Aliyah Bolling finished fourth in the 100 meters (12.89) and third in the 200 (26.69), and Lily Lobovits was fourth in the shot put (33-9-½) for Taconic.

Wahconah’s boys, who got their meet off to a big start in the pentathlon on Thursday, got a fourth-place showing on Saturday from Olds in the 400 hurdles (58.84).

Other Berkshire County highlights came in the throws, where the Hoosac Valley tandem of Dominic Acquista and Nolan Roberts finished third and sixth, respectively, in the shot put, and Laura Thomas, the lone Drury athlete to qualify for the sectional, placed third in the javelin with a throw of 106-1.
