Mount Greylock Tops Wahconah on Tie-Breaker
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Depth was key for the Mount Greylock golf team Saturday as it picked up wins over Monument Mountain, Mount Everett and Wahconah at Waubeeka Golf Links.
It came down to a tie-breaker in the match against Wahconah after both teams finished at 182.
That sent things to the fifth finisher for each team, and Mounties freshmen Ben Dingman and Owen Petropulos each finished with a 48 to edge Wahconah's Tim Kaley, who finished fifth on his team with a 49.
Wahconah went 2-1 on the day, beating Monument Mountain, 182-183, and Mount Everett, 182-214.
The Mounties took care of business on their home course while being the only team to finish with all six players in the 40s.
"My first year [coaching], we tied at Lenox, and it came down to like the sixth man down," Mount Greylock coach Mitchell Spooner said. "It's been so long, I forgot what the tie-breaker was. I was going to announce a tie.
"Every time we've played Wahconah this year, every shot has counted. It's been one shot one way or the other."
Mount Greylock's Alexander Axt earned medalist honors with a 6-over-par 42, beating out Wahconah's Dan Wilson (43).
But it was not a day for great numbers. Monument Mountain's Andrew Churchill (47) carded the day's only birdie, on the 342-yard, par-4 sixth hole.
Spooner indiciated his team did not have much of a home-course edge.
"It wasn't the course we've been playing the last couple of weeks," he said. "It dried off. The wind made it fast. The wind made it firm out there.
"And it wasn't the course it was four days ago. It's the course it was three weeks ago, but we weren't playing three weeks ago."
Cayden Conry (47), Ben Prescott (48) and Cameron Turner (48) rounded out the scoring for the Mounties.
Turner's 48 appeared to give the Mounties the win outright when it broke a tie with Monument Mountain for first on the scoreboard with one group on the course.
But Wahconah's Kevin Esko bogied No. 9 to card a 47, pull his team into a first place tie and force a tie-breaker.
Mount Everett was led by Cooper Rothvoss, who parred the last two holes to finish strong and come in with a 44, two behind Axt.
Monument Mountain got a 44 from Bradley Danyluk to lead the way.
The Eagles and Spartans, who both call Wyantenuck Country Club home this fall, were playing with heavy hearts after the death this week of golf pro Thomas Sullivan, who lost his life in Wednesday evening's thunderstorms.
"It's been a tough week for golf in general with, obviously, the passing of Sully," Spooner said. "So to see the Wyantenuck teams here, holding their heads up, wearing ribbons -- it was nice to see them out there and enjoying it."
