LENOX, Mass. -- Friday’s boys cross country race at Lenox Memorial came down to a virtual dead heat.

And no one really cared who won … least of all the competitors.

“Me and Jesse were just working together, it was a fun race, and we’re looking forward to the next one and the next one after that,” Mount Greylock senior Josh Cheung said after outleaning teammate and classmate Jesse Seid for the win.

“We went out a little fast. We just wanted to run our own race and see how we felt.”

Cheung’s own race was good for a time of 17 minutes, 40.70 seconds, .09 seconds better than Seid and about eight seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Another Mount Greylock boy, Jacob Fink, was third in 17:49 as the Mounties took five of the top seven positions en route to a dual meet win over Mount Everett at the five-team race.

On the girls’ side, Mount Greylock earned two dual wins over Mount Everett and Wahconah behind a one-two finish of their own. Josephine Smith (20:31.74) finished first ahead of teammate Katherine Swann (20:39.35) and the rest of the field.

The Mount Greylock and Lenox girls split the top six finishes. Mountie Jacqueline Wells was fifth.

Lenox got a third-place finish from Ellen Huth (20:41.14), a fourth from Grace Elliot and a sixth from Ava Bachman.

Wahconah’s Haley Crosier broke the Mounties’ and Millionaires’ run at the top, coming in seventh in 21:09.31.

Hoosac Valley’s girls were led by Natiya Cilli (23:32.02) and Jamie Barthe in 23rd and 24th, respectively. Mount Everett’s Lucja Stube led the Eagles with a time of 32:10.44.

On the boys’ side, Mount Everett’s Cole Duval cracked the top 10 with a ninth-place time of 18:58.67.

Lenox’s Colin Young (18:15.99) was fifth, and Wahconah’s P.J. Pharmer (18:38.16) placed sixth. Hoosac Valley was led by Justin Levesque, who placed 21st in 20:16.16.
