Generals Pound Blue Devils In Mercy-Rule Win

Staff Reports

10:28AM / Saturday, April 28, 2012

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — After three straight road games to start the season, the Drury baseball team's first home date at Joe Wolfe Field didn't go exactly as planned for the Blue Devils on Wednesday. Al Marceau's club committed six errors while four different pitchers allowed 12 hits on the day to give Pittsfield a 16-1 win in a game shortened to just six innings because of the mercy rule.

Playing on its own field didn't seem to help Drury or its defense, which fell to 1-3 on the season with its second mercy-rule defeat in just four games.

"We did everything we could do wrong in this game," Marceau said. "Defense was the main issue of the day. Ten unearned runs just won't get the job done. A myriad of mental mistakes added to the physical mistakes made for a very poor performance. Offensively, we just aren't making adjustments. We are going need to make some changes to get back on track."

Devils starter Alex Bush left the game after just one inning with arm soreness. He allowed three earned runs with one strikeout and one walk to take the loss. The Generals continued to score against Drury's bullpen, building its lead with three more runs in the second and two more runs in the third. A seven-run sixth inning blew the game open for Pittsfield and ended the contest one inning early.

The Blue Devils managed just four hits at the plate, with senior Max Quinn driving in his team's lone run with an RBI single in the first inning. Drury will try to regroup when it hosts Lee at 4 p.m. on Friday.
