Quinn Carries Drury To Win Over Lee

Staff Reports

11:50AM / Saturday, April 28, 2012

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Drury baseball team needed two things in its game against Lee on Friday: a good start from Max Quinn on the mound and a strong effort from its beleaguered defense behind him.

The Blue Devils received both, resulting in a much-needed 11-2 home win over the Wildcats.

Quinn scattered eight hits, allowing just two earned runs over six innings of work to help Drury improve its record to 2-3 this year. He struck out five batters without issuing a walk before turning the ball over to junior Kodey Bryce, who pitched a scoreless seventh frame to end the game. The Devils' defense, meanwhile, played mistake-free baseball just one game after making six errors in a blowout loss to Pittsfield.

"It was a much better performance today," Drury head coach Al Marceau said. "Max continues to pitch like an ace and keeps coming through offensively with big hits and RBI. Robert Jutras had a strong game offensively, and it appears that some guys are starting to get going with the bats. We had a lot more fire today, and we started feeding off one another. Our defense was solid, and Kareen Becket came up and gave us a nice spark on offensive with two big RBI. He has a learning curve as a freshmen, but he doesn't seem overmatched at the varsity level. I like the way the team embraced him, and I think we can continue to improve."

Jutras went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored in the game, while junior Ryan Ouimet chipped in with a 2-for-3 day and three runs scored. The hosts broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Ouimet started things off with a double and later scored when Quinn (two RBIs) roped an RBI triple. Senior Slayter Aubin (two RBIs) then came through with with an RBI hit before Becket finished things off with a two-run single.

Drury padded its lead by scoring one run in the fourth and four more in the sixth. The Blue Devils next hosts Wahconah at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.
