NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Jack Cangelosi was in control for the Mount Greylock baseball team on Monday at Joe Wolfe Field.
Cangelosi struck out 11 hitters in five innings of work to earn a 9-0 win over Drury.
He got a big lift from his offense when the Mounties batted around and scored seven runs in the top of the third.
But he did not appear to need that much support. Cagelosi did not give up a hit until the bottom of the fourth, and that infield single was the only hit the Blue Devils could muster against him.
“He was pitching great,” Mount Greylock coach Rick Paris said of his starter. “He was on target, hitting his spots.
“He hasn’t pitched for a while, either. It’s been almost eight days since he was out there.”
Jameson Byliss threw two strong innings of relief for the Mounties, striking out one, walking one and allowing no hits thanks to Alex Axt, who snared a line drive at second to start a 4-6 double play to end the game.
Mount Greylock started the game by threatening in the first and second innings. But both times,Drury starter Noah Miller was able to get out of trouble, stranding runners at second and third in both frames.
But the Mounties cashed in on their base runners in the third in a big way.
Landen Jamula led off with a single and advanced on a balk. Jackson Shelsy then reached on a fielder’s choice that left runners at first and second.
After a ball to the backstop put both runners in scoring position, Thomas Martin’s two-run double gave the Mounties a 2-0 lead.
Later in the rally, the bases were loaded for Jamula, whose low liner with two out found a hole on the right side. Derek Paris chased two other Mounties around the basepaths to score on the play, making it 7-0.
“Landen Jamula just stayed hot,” Rick Paris said. “He put the ball through the right side. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bases-clearing single before, but the guys were running. They got a good jump, and cleared the bases.”
Mount Greylock took advantage of three Drury errors to tack on a pair of runs in the fifth.
Jamula finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate to lead an eight-hit Mount Greylock attack.
Nick Lescarbeau had both Drury hits and threw an inning of scoreless relief after coming in with two out in the top of the third.
The Blue Devils (2-3) will look to snap a two-game skid on Wednesday when they host Franklin Tech.
Mount Greylock (3-1) is scheduled to host Wahconah on Tuesday.
