NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Mike Chappell had done just about everything right for the McCann Tech baseball team this spring. Everything except earn a win on the mound for his team.

That all changed on Monday, however, as Chappell allowed just one earned run on two hits to lead the Hornets to a 7-3 home win over Saint Mary's. The senior hurler went the distance, striking out 11 batters and walking four to improve his individual record o 1-3 this season. Despite logging just under a team-leading 37 innings so far this year, Chappell had somehow lost his first three decisions despite an impressive 70 strikeouts compared to just 12 base on balls.

"It was another strong outing today for Mike but only this time he gets the win," McCann head coach Pat Ryan said. "An aggressive first inning with the bats allowed us to get four runs of support for Mike. The whole team added a total of nine hits today. Putting a couple of hits together produces runs, and that's what we did today."

The Hornets jumped out of the gate quickly against Saints' starter Matt Plasse, scoring four runs in the first inning before adding two more in the second. Senior Steve Barbeau sparked his team's big first inning by smacking an RBI triple, while classmate Nate Gutmann finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

Plasse was charged with the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits while fanning five batters. McCann next plays at Sabis at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
