GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass — Nick Greenleaf outdueled Justin Nichols on Monday, keeping the Monument Mountain baseball team undefeated and handing Hoosac Valley its second straight defeat with a 5-0 win at home.

Greenleaf allowed just three hits on the day, striking out six and walking three to earn the complete-game shutout. Nichols, making his second varsity start, threw four scoreless innings to start the game before Wilson Flower doubled in Jon Obanhein in the fifth. The Spartans, who improved to 7-0 with the win, then broke the game open by busting out for four runs in the bottom of the sixth

"We had men in scoring position in the first three innings against Greenleaf, but we just couldn't get a big hit," Hurricanes head coach Bob Rivard said. "Justin pitched well, only allowing three earned runs in five plus innings of work."

Nichols finished with three strikeouts and zero walks as his record dropped to 1-1 this season. Greenleaf also added a double from the plate, while Flower and Obanhein each finished with two runs batted in. Senior catcher Connor Tworig had a productive day for Hoosac (4-2), going 1 for 2 with a walk and a stolen base.

The Hurricanes will try to break its two-game skid with a road game against Wahconah at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
