Hoosac Builds Big Lead, Holds Off Wahconah

DALTON, Mass. — Opportunity knocked for the Hoosac Valley baseball team on Wednesday, and the Hurricanes opened the door to Wahconah's generosity by pulling away for a 10-6 win on the road.

Hoosac (5-2) took advantage of five Wahconah errors, scoring 10 runs on only seven hits. Bob Rivard's club jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning, scoring in a variety ways without coming up with a single base hit. Wahconah starter Chuck Dooley walked one run in before a pair of passed balls scored two more. An RBI groundout closed out the scoring for the Hurricanes, who traded runs with the Warriors (4-5) the rest of the way.

Senior Corey Meczywor led the Hoosac offense, reaching base all four times he came to bat and finishing with two hits, two walks and three runs scored. Classmate Zach Brassard also went 2-for-4, helping him keep his team-leading batting average at .500 for the season. Senior Tanner Bird added a two-run single and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the game for starter Mike Koperniak, who allowed three earned runs in six innings to pick up the win.

Koperniak wasn't as dominant as he was in his first two starts of the season, but he still had enough to improve his record to 3-0, striking out one batter and walking three along the way. He also survived three errors by the 'Canes, who did a much better job of working around their mistakes than Wahconah did. The hosts made two costly errors in the game, one that led to a three-run fourth inning and another that started a two-run sixth.

The Warriors did manage to collect four doubles on the day, one of which came from Joe DiMassimo. Both him and Justin Schnopp each finished with two RBIs on the day.

Hoosac next hosts South Division rival Mount Greylock at 7 p.m. on Monday.
