Hoosac Offense Overwhelms Lenox

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Senior pitcher Mike Koperniak almost threw his second no-hitter of the season on Wednesday. Thanks to his team's potent offense, however, he didn't need to.

Koperniak shut down Lenox for five hitless innings, while the offense of the Hoosac Valley baseball team erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to give the Hurricanes a 15-2 win at the Joseph Zavattaro Athletic Complex. Koperniak had already no-hit the Millionaires back on April 18, and he was on top on his game the second time around as well, striking out eight batters and walking two before leaving the game in the sixth.

The Hurricanes (7-2) led 13-0 by the end of the fifth, giving Hoosac head coach Bob Rivard the excuse he needed to get Koperniak out of the game a little early. Koperniak pitched an inning of relief against Mount Greylock to get his fourth win of the season on Monday, so it wasn't a hard decision for Rivard to pull him early with his fifth win of the year well in hand against Lenox (4-7).

Sophomore Brandon Tworig closed out the game, allowing one earned run on two hits, striking out one and walking two batters in two innings of relief. Koperniak also collected two RBIs at the plate and finished with three runs scored. Ten different 'Canes collected at least one hit against three Millionaires pitchers on the day. Sophomore Matt Braman led the way going 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. Seniors Zach Brassard and Jesse Larabee each came through with a double, while classmate Tanner Bird finished with three RBIs.

Hoosac next plays at Mount Everett at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
