Hurricanes Have Off Day In Loss To Eagles

SHEFFIELD, Mass. — It's been a pretty smooth ride for the Hoosac Valley baseball team so far this season. The Hurricanes hit their first real bump on the road on Friday, however, only managing two hits in a 13-1 road loss to Mount Everett.

Eagles' starter Eli Cook was on top of his game, allowing just one unearned run on two hits to earn the complete-game victory. Cook struck out five and didn't allow a single walk to improve his team's record to 8-5 this year. His only blemish was giving up an RBI double to Hoosac senior Adam Mazzantini after junior Jake Hall reached on an error in the top of the fifth inning. Cook and the Eagles already had a 9-1 lead at that point, though, and scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game on ice.

The Everett offense had their way against four different 'Canes pitchers, collecting 11 hits and earning six walks in the game. Colby Rueger had a double and drove in a pair of runs for the hosts, while Will Danz, Erik Derwitsch and John Ormsbee each finished with two RBI.

Sophomore Matt Braman took the loss for Hoosac (7-3), allowing eight runs, only three of which were earned, in three innings of work. Four Hurricanes' errors helped the Eagles take control of the game with eight runs combined in both the third and fourth frames.

Hoosac will try to rebound on Monday, when it plays at St. Joe's at 4 p.m.
