SHELBURNE FALLS, Mass. -- The Hoosac Valley baseball team picked up its 10th win of the season on Saturday afternoon, qualifying for postseason play with a 4-2 road win at Mohawk.

Tanner Bird, who usually serves as the Hurricanes' top reliever, played a major role in helping the Hurricanes snap a three-game losing streak. The Hoosac senior went the distance in his first start of the season, giving up two runs (one earned) on only four hits. He struck out four batters without issuing a walk, improving his record this year to 2-0 in the process.

The Hurricanes (10-7) got on the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Mohawk countered with a run in their half of the inning, however, and the game stayed tied until the top of the sixth. That's when the 'Canes scored two runs, one on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Conner Tworig and the other on a double steal, to take the lead for good. Bob Rivard's club added an insurance run in the seventh, making sure an otherwise tough week ended on a very positive note.

Senior Zach Brassard led Hoosac's offense, going 2 for 3 on the day. The Hurricanes return to action on Monday with a home game against Wahconah at 4 p.m.
