Tworig Helps Hurricanes Rally Past Warriors

ADAMS, Mass. — Conner Tworig and the Hoosac Valley baseball team saved its best stuff for last on Monday, rallying from a 3-0 deficit by scoring four times in the final two innings to pull out a 4-3 victory over Wahconah at Renfrew Park.

After the Warriors opened up an early lead by scoring three times in the top of the second inning, the Hurricanes (11-7) finally got on the scoreboard with a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Wahconah starter Ryan Kasala (six strikeouts, two walks) needed just one more out to earn the victory, but Tworig came up with a clutch two-run single to tie the game at three runs apiece.

The senior catcher took second on the throw to home and later moved to third on an infield single by sophomore Ian Hill. Hoosac then scored the winning run on an unconventional play. Hill tried to steal second base and, in the process, induced a balk that allowed pinch-runner Sean Ryan-Kut to score the winning run from third base. It was a tough break for Kasala, who took the loss by allowing three earned runs on 12 hits.

The 'Canes earned their second straight win thanks to a superb relief effort from senior Corey Meczywor. Sophomore starter Justin Nichols did a good job, but left the game down 3-0 after three and a third innings of work. Nichols struck out three batters without a walk before turning the ball over to Meczywor, who held Wahconah hitless over the final four innings of the game. Meczywor ended up earning his first win of the season, fanning five with two free passes.

Tworig and fellow senior Zach Lancia each went 3 for 4 in the game to lead Hoosac offense. Classmate Jesse Larabee also went 2 for 3 with one RBI for the Hurricanes, who next host St. Joe's at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
