Hurricanes' Rally Falls Short Against Spartans

ADAMS, Mass. — The Hoosac Valley baseball team closed out the regular season with a tough 4-3 home loss to Monument Mountain on Friday, coming up just a run short after a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

The Hurricanes (11-9) trailed 4-0 entering the sixth when their offense finally got on the board against Spartans' starter Garrett Norton. Senior shortstop Tanner Bird, who led the Hoosac offense by going 3 for 4 with an RBI, drove in one run with a double, while classmates Zach Brassard and Corey Meczywor each plated runs of their own in the frame. 

The 'Canes were able to chase Norton out of the game, but Wilson Flower locked up the win for Monument (17-3) by striking out four batters in two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save. Norton ended up earning the win, allowing three earned runs in five innings of work, fanning seven and walking one. 

Senior Mike Koperniak (5-2) was charged with just his second loss of the season, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. He ended up going the distance, striking out eight batters with three base on balls. 

"This was a tough loss," Hoosac head coach Bob Rivard said. "This will hurt us in the seedings [for the Western Mass. tournament]. 

Senior Zach Lancia collected two hits with a run scored for the Hurricanes. The Spartans' Bobby Kinne led all hitters on the day, batting 4 for 4 with a double. 

Both teams will be now wait for the Division 2 seedings to be released on Tuesday night.
