WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Mount Greylock’s Jake Newberry stole home on the back end of a double steal in the bottom of the fourth to score the winning run in a 2-1 win over Holyoke on Sunday.

 

Newberry started the inning with a double to center and took third on a wild pitch.

 

Malcolm Leyda worked a walk to put runners at the corners, and Newberry scored as Leyda took second to make it a 2-1 game.

 

Cam Miller and Jameson Bayliss made that lead hold up.

 

Miller, who got the start, went six innings on the hill, striking out five and allowing just one hit and no earned runs.

 

Bayliss struck out a pair in a scoreless seventh inning.

 

“Senior Cam Miller pitched great for us today throwing high volume strikes and kept them off balance with multiple off speed,” Mount Greylock coach Rick Paris said. “He was pitching so well he had a no hitter going to the seventh with one out before he finally gave up his first hit which was a triple to right that was a hard line drive that was misplayed a bit.

 

“Luckily for us Jamo Bayliss was available. He has not thrown since the [Wahconah] game a few weeks ago where he had injured his arm. He threw a bullpen yesterday and said he felt good and that he could throw If we needed him for an inning or two. Well that’s just what we needed.”

 

After the Knights scored in the top of the first inning, Mount Greylock tied it in the bottom of the frame when Miller doubled to drive in Mason Canata.

 

Newberry went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles to lead an eight-hit attack for Mount Greylock, which finishes the regular season 8-11 and started the day on the bubble for the Division 5 State Tournament.

 

In the most recent in-season power rankings, the Mounties are No. 31 in the state. The top 32 teams – plus teams ranked No. 33 and lower with .500 records – make the tournament.
