WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Sarah Polumbo and Ainsley Abel each scored seven goals Wednesday to lead the Mount Greylock girls lacrosse team to a 20-8 win over Lynnfield in the first round of the Division 4 State Tournament on John Allen Field.

The Mounties jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but 24th-seeded Lynnfield battled back with a four-goal run to cut the margin to three goals.

But Polumbo scored with an assist from Zoe Armet to snap that run and Mount Greylock took back control of the game.

“We just made some silly plays, turnovers down at our offensive end,” Mount Greylock coach Jeff Stripp said of Lynnfield’s run. “I was confident that, the way things were going, we’d get things back in our offensive end in short order.

“They played a great game. [Lynnfield] zoned up, which we don’t see very often out here, so it was good for us to play against that. The girls executed well what we put in place against a zone. … That’s something we’ve been preparing for in the playoffs, because we knew we were going to see it.”

Tess Leveque and Armet each scored twice, and Lucy McWeeny and Phoebe Hughes each scored a goal in the win.

Teigan Brady backstopped the Mounties to their sixth straight win.

“I’m very pleased with the way they showed up today,” Stripp said. “They knew that was the goal – to start fast. And I think that’s exactly what they did. It helps when you can get some quick goals when you play an opponent you haven’t seen before.

“I was definitely pleased with our goalie play. Christy [Rech] wasn’t here today, so Tiegan, our eighth-grader stepped up and filled that role today. I’m pleased with how the defense protected her, and I think she did a nice job.”

Ninth-seeded Mount Greylock moves on to play at No. 8 Mashpee in the Sweet 16.
