LEE, Mass. – The Georgetown softball team Friday jumped out to a 6-0 lead and hung on for a 9-6 win over Lee in the first round of the Division 5 State Tournament.

The visitors scored five runs in the second inning  and never trailed in earning a berth in the Sweet 16.

Sixteenth-seeded Lee (12-9) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Georgetown’s Maddie Grant got a swinging third strike with runners on second and third to end the threat. She then pitched around a two-out walk in the seventh, getting the final out on a grounder to the circle.

Grant finished with 10 strikeouts while giving up 11 hits.

Lee’s Bri Lynch allowed just seven hits and struck out 12, but seven Wildcat errors led to eight unearned runs.

Lynch helped her cause by going 3-for-4 with an RBI at the plate. Addie Mayberry was 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs batted in, and Taryn Bannon was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Karlynn Hopkins finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
