HATFIELD, Mass — After a pair of sizable defeats to start the season, the McCann Tech softball team turned the tables on Smith Academy on Tuesday, pounding 17 hits and playing error-free softball to roll to a 12-4 win on the road.

The Hornets (1-2) picked up their first win of the season by having six different players collect multiple hits. Robin Finnegan's club started strong with five runs in the top of the first inning and blew the game open with six more runs in the fourth. Senior Brittany Briggs led McCann's offense by going 3 for 5 with two doubles and one run scored. Sophomore Jessica Sunn also smacked a two-run double on her way to a two-hit, three-RBI day, while senior Erika Ziemba went 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Jamie LeTourneau added a two-run triple for the Hornets, who also received a double and a triple out of classmate Ashley Alibozek. More importantly, the McCann defense didn't make a single error the entire game, helping Ziemba work around 16 Falcons' hits to earn her first win of the year.

"It was a good solid defensive game for us to pick up our first win," Finnegan said. "Our bats were also working, and we put a full game together."

Ziemba allowed two earned runs in a complete-game performance, striking out eight and walking three to improve her record to 1-2 on the year. The Hornets next play at North County rival Mount Greylock at 4 p.m. on Friday.
