HOLYOKE, Mass. — Led by a great day from sophomore Olivia Esoldi, the McCann Tech softball team generated some much-needed offense in its game against Holyoke Catholic on Monday, Unfortunately for the Hornets, they came up just a little short in a 5-3 road loss to the Gaels.

Esoldi helped McCann to its largest run total in five games, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a solo home run in the seventh inning. Erika Ziemba also went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, but the Hornets only managed one other hit the rest of the game against Holyoke starter Megan Logan. She went the distance to pick up the victory, striking out nine batters and walking three.

"It was a good, competitive game, but unfortunately leaving too many runners on base, not stringing hits together, a couple of bad calls and four errors did us in," McCann head coach Robin Finnegan said. "Holyoke's pitcher was on with nine strikeouts, but we had our chances. We just couldn't catch a break. Olivia led the way offensively, and Erika pitched well again, but we are making her throw way too many pitches."

The four errors came back to cost Ziemba, who was only charged with two of the five runs she allowed. She didn't allow an extra-base hit the entire game, scattering six singles to go along with eight strikeouts and five base on balls. The Gaels took control of the game early on, scoring two runs in the second inning to go up 3-1. Bobbi Morey led the visitors by going 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

The Hornets return to action on Wednesday with a home game against Granby at 4 p.m.
