NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The McCann softball team was defeated 9-5 Wednesday afternoon by Smith Academy at DiSanti Field on senior day, where the Hornets honored their one senior, Allexia Andrews.

Smith took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second and plated another in the third to take a 5-0 lead before McCann's Samantha Dorwin stole home in the bottom of the third to add a run to the board putting the score at 5-1.

Smith drew in three more runs in the top of the fourth going ahead 8-1.

Haley Malloy pitched into the fifth innings for McCann, striking out five; she was replaced in the circle in the by Taylor Sprague, who struck out four.

"We've had two games in a row and Haley wasn't getting the calls," McCann coach Robin Finn said. "We couldn't adjust to it and I didn't want to overuse her knowing that we have another game tomorrow."

Smith added its final run in the top of the fifth before McCann came out and added four runs in the last two innings.

They came from an RBI single from Lauren Bartlett in the sixth and a steal of home by Malloy.

In the bottom of the seventh, Britt Tassone had an RBI triple followed by an RBI double from Quinones, who was then thrown out stealing third to end the game.

"I try to instill in the girls that you have to play seven innings of softball or you're not going to win very much," Finn said. "And it's really not about the wins for us at this point, it's about just improving and gaining confidence, but we had a lot going on today with senior day, it's cold, so hopefully this is a learning experience for them."
