Hoosac's Tomkowicz Shuts Out Taconic
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — It probably didn't seem like much when senior Sabrina Sommer scored on an error in the top of the first inning, but that play ended up being the winning run in the Hoosac Valley softball team's 1-0 road win over Taconic on Monday.Hurricanes' starter Caroline Tomkowicz did the rest, holding the Braves (2-8) to just three hits the rest of the game to earn her third shutout win in five starts. Tomkowicz struck out eight and walked just one batter to improve her record to 4-1 this season. It's been rather a meteoric rise this year for Tomkowicz, who has surrendered just two earned runs in five complete starts this season. Since she made her first start against St. Joe' s on April 23, a previously winless Hoosac (5-7) team has now won five out its last six games to pull itself back into playoff contention.
"Caroline had another great day at the mound," Hurricanes head coach Morgan Shafer said. "She allowed just three hits and even though the defense made four errors that allowed runners on base, they never made it past second. The defense picked itself up, and Caroline kept the bats from getting any big hits."
Taconic starter Carly Decker also performed extremely well from the circle. allowing three hits of her own with four strikeouts and no walks to take the loss. She did allow a single to Sommer in the top of the first, however, and that was the one hit that cost her the win. Sommer then stole second base and came home when the Braves' third baseman made a throwing error on a grounder by junior Alexis Bushika.
Junior Sierra McLean and sophomore Kassandra Kazimierczak also had hits for Hoosac, which next hosts rival Drury at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
