ADAMS, Mass. -- The Mount Greylock softball team defeated Hoosac Valley Tuesday afternoon, 7-3, at Russell Field.

It was scoreless after three innings from both sides, but in the top of the fourth the Mounties got the hits they needed to bring base runners home.

It started with a hit from Fiona Kelly bringing in Olivia DiNicola and Miranda Voller to take a 2-0 lead.

Then the Mounties came back out in the fifth and added five more. Voller had a one-run single, followed by a two-run double from Hailey Guest, and two-run single for Samantha Betti.

"We did a good job getting some base runners on in the early part of the game and then in the fourth inning we finally got the hits to plate those runs," Greylock coach June Blake said. "We did a good job with base runners and getting those runs across."

Hoosac got on board in the bottom of the fifth inning when six straight batters got on base. Alyssa Pause hit one out to left field that brought in Megan Guyette and Kali Puppolo, Pause then made it home off a hit from Erin Girard. Girard was later thrown out at home plate on an attempt to steal.

Kelly pitched all seven innings for the Mounties striking out five, one of which came in the seventh inning, when they went 1-2-3 to finish the game.

"We played pretty good defensively, we had a few lapses in the fifth inning," Blake said. "But we came up with some big plays, throwing base runners out at home plate, we made some good heads up plays behind Fiona who pitched a fantastic game for us today."

Greylock hosts Monument Mountain Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. And Hoosac travels to Greylock Friday for a 4 p.m. start.
