ADAMS, Mass. -- The Hoosac Valley softball team jumped on Taconic early, giving starter Amanda Meczywor more than enough cushion to cruise to an 11-1 win at home on Wednesday.

Meczywor pitched six scoreless innings before giving up one earned run in the seventh. She allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out five batters to improve her season record to 10-6. The Hurricanes (13-6, 9-2 at home) made things easier for Meczywor by scoring three runs in the first inning and adding five more in the second to open a commanding 8-0 lead.

Senior Karli Schrade and junior Ashley Ciepiela each had RBI singles in the first inning, while senior Katelynn Iacuessa also scored a run with a bases-loaded walk. After senior Samantha Howe and freshman Kassandra Kazimierczak each scored runs with a single and a walk, respectively, junior Kasey Puppolo struck the biggest blow in the second inning with a two-run single to score the last of Hoosac's five runs in the frame.

"Amanda did a great job pitching, holding them to just five hits, and our defense played a great game today as well," Hurricanes head coach Morgan Shafer said.

Howe and Ciepiela each had two hits and one RBI in the game, while sophomore Tori Rumbolt went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and drove in a run in the sixth with an RBI single.

Kasey Turner started and took the loss for the Braves.

Hoosac closes out the regular season with a 4 p.m. game at Lenox on Thursday.
