WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Mount Greylock junior Grace Dodig on Monday went 3-for-3 with a pair of triples and five RBIs … in the second inning.

It was that kind of day for visiting Lenox, which dropped a 22-0 decision to the Mounties, who got five strong innings in the circle from junior Fiona Kelley.

Mount Greylock improved to 2-0 on the year after posting its second straight win by 20 runs or more.

Mounties coach June Blake knows that tougher days are ahead for her squad.

“We had some solid hits, and I think we did an OK job defensively,” she said. “It’s early in the season, second game out. We still have to work on some things defensively and offensively, too, to prepare for our regular league play.”

Kelley struck out the side in the first two innings on Monday, though Lenox (0-2) did put three runners in base in the opening frames.

The Mounties offense put two across in the first thanks to a single by Elena Cerveira and a double by Carly Munzer, but the Mount Greylock offense really got going in the second, when it pounded out 14 hits to score 17 runs.

Dodig did a lot of that damage, but Rachel Voller and Sam Betti each added a single and a double in the rally. Voller drove in four runs in her two at bats as the Mounties went through the order twice.

Blake started clearing her bench after the score got out of hand, and Kelley scattered three hits the rest of the way to earn her first shutout of the season.

“She’s starting to build some confidence on the mound, and that’s starting to show,” Blake said of Kelley. “I think she does a really good job getting ahead of batters. She can do a little bit more with pitches being ahead of batters, and that puts us in a better position defensively.

“She’s added a couple of pitches. She’s throwing a rise and throwing a little bit of a screwball. We’re kind of working with those pitches and trying to work them in.”

Mount Greylock is home against Drury on Thursday.
