GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass — Despite being one of the first squads to play a game this year, the Mount Greylock softball team needed zero time to warm up in its season-opening game against  Monument  Mountain on Monday afternoon. The Mounties' bats were hot right from the start, scoring 18 runs over the first two innings on their way to a 29-4 win on the road.

"We got off to a quick start at the plate by scoring seven runs in the top of the first," Greylock head coach June Blake said. "I was happy with the way we swung the bat today."

The Mounties followed up a seven-run first inning with 11 more runs in the second frame. Miranda Voller, Michaela DiNicola and Meredith Dezieck (two doubles) each went 4 for 5 on the day, combining for 11 RBI and 10 runs scored. Senior catcher Caitie Benoit also had a banner day at the plate, reaching base all six times she came to bat. She finished with a double, triple, three runs batted in and six runs scored for a Greylock offense that collected 22 hits off of Spartans' starter After Sawyer.

Blake's squad collected two more runs in the third inning and nine more in the fifth before the game was called early due to the mercy rule. Sophomore Heather Tomkowicz allowed three earned runs on three hits to pick up her first victory of the season for the Mounties. She struck out nine batters while only walking three on the day.

Greylock is back in action again on Wednesday with a home game against Hoosac Valley at 4 p.m.
