SHEFFIELD, Mass — The Drury softball team got the start it wanted but not the finish it needed in a 3-2 loss at Mount Everett on Wednesday.

Junior Laryssa LaPointe drove the third pitch of the game deep into right field for a leadoff home run. Classmate Katie Hancock then reached with a single before stealing second base. After an out moved Hancock to third base, junior Amanda Ramsdell drove her in with a long sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Blue Devils a quick 2-0 lead out of the gate.

Eagles' starter Alicia Bazonski took over from there, however, striking out 12 Drury batters without a walk to hand the visiting Blue Devils (5-1) their first loss of the year. Everett (4-2) tied the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings before Deseraye Conaway (two hits) took advantage of Drury error in the infield to score the game's winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Ramsdell, who went 2 for 2 in the game to increase her season average to .688, made it all the way to second base in the seventh inning before Drury ran out of outs.

"We started the game on the right foot with Laryssa's solo home run," Blue Devils head coach Mary Ann Maroni said. "But, unfortunately, that was all she wrote. We scattered only three more hits over the course of six innings due to the sharp pitching of Bazonski. It was a hard-fought battle in which our young players learned a few lessons they will carry with them into future games."

Sophomore Cat Record allowed two earned runs on nine hits to take her first loss of the year. She struck out one batter and walked two as her record fell to 5-1. Sam Hoover had an RBI single to cut the Devils' lead to 2-1 in the third inning. One inning later, Conaway tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Tricia Race.

Drury is back in action again on Friday, with a home game against Monument Mountain at 1 p.m.
