'Canes Have Tough Day in Loss to Eagles

SHEFFIELD, Mass — Alicia Bazonski got her team off to a fast start with her bat and closed out the win with her arm, limiting the Hoosac Valley softball team to just five hits in a 7-0 home win for Mount Everett on Tuesday.

Bazonski's bat did the talking in the bottom of the first inning, smacking a three-run homer to left-center field after teammates Claire Tomich and Natasha MacLeay reached base with singles. Tomich then came through with a key double in a two-run fifth inning for the Eagles (1-2), who had more than enough cushion at that point with Bazonski scattering Hoosac's five hits around her 13 strikeouts.

"Today was not our day," Hurricanes head coach Morgan Shafer said. "We had a hard time getting a hit or producing a run when we did get on base. We loaded the bases up in the sixth inning, but we didn't score when the opportunity presented itself. We are going to work harder in practice to overcome the obstacles and strive to get our first win against Pittsfield on Friday."

Senior catcher Tanelle Ciempa went 2 for 3 with a double to lead the Hoosac offense. Unfortunately for Ciempa, she was called out in the second inning when she tried to stretch her double into a triple. After Tori Rumbolt and Sabrina Sommer reached base with singles in the top of the sixth, things got really interesting when junior Alexis Bushika walked to load the bases. The Hurricanes (0-2) couldn't get a run home, however, and Bushika was forced to settle for her second loss of the year. She allowed five earned runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking two.

The Generals host Hoosac at 4 p.m. on Friday.
