Hoosac Has No Answers For Wahconah

DALTON, Mass. -- The Hoosac Valley softball team might just want to forget about Friday's game at Wahconah.

The Hurricanes didn't have much to feel good about, as the Warriors scored at least two runs in each of the first five innings on their way to a 15-3 win in a game shortened to just five innings because of the mercy rule. Wahconah (13-5) roughed up three different Hoosac pitchers, and the Hurricanes' defense didn't help matters by making six errors in the field.

Sophomore Caroline Tomkowicz (5-3) took the loss for Hoosac (7-9), allowing four earned runs and three walks in two innings of work. The Warriors ended up with 12 hits total against Tomkowicz and 'Canes relievers Ashley Ciepiela and Alexis Bushika. Kelcie Yarmey led the way, going 4 for 4 with a triple. Gabby Lavinio also had pair of big hits, including a triple and a two-run home run in the second inning that gave the hosts an early 6-0 lead.

Bushika was Hoosac's top hitter of the day, going 2 for 3 with a triple, two RBI and one run scored. Sophomore Kassandra Kazimierczak also had a solo home run during the Hurricanes' three-run third inning, the only bump in the road for Wahconah starter Zoe Roberts. The Warriors sophomore won her first career start, allowing three earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

Hoosac still needs to win three out of its final four games to qualify for the Division 2 Western Mass. tournament. The Hurricanes will give it another shot on Monday, when they host Lee at 7 p.m.
