GREAT BARRINGTON -- Talk about a good start to a season and a career.

Freshman third baseman Kassy Kazimierczak hit a three-run homer in her first at bat of her varsity career, helping the Hoosac Valley softball team break out with eight runs in the first inning of a 10-2 win at Monument Mountain. Kazimierczak already had a career day in the Hurricanes' first game of the season, going 5 for 5 with four RBI and one run scored. After her home run in the first inning, Kazimierczak hit four more singles, including an RBI-hit in the third inning.

Hoosac led 10-0 in head coach Morgan Shafer's varsity coaching debut before Monument broke up the shutout with a two-run fifth inning. Senior captain Amanda Meczywor went the distance to pick up her first win of the season. She allowed two unearned runs, struck out five and didn't allow a single base on balls.

"Amanda pitched a great game today." Shafer said. "She had excellent control and hit her spots. Everyone on the team hit well in the beginning of the game, where we got most of our hits. Not only did Kassy have a big day offensively, but she also made some key plays at third base."

Besides her solid day in the circle, Meczywor also drove in the first run of the game and later hit a double in the third inning. Shafer also said sophomore shortstop Tori Rumbolt had four putouts on defense while going 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and one run batted in.

The Hurricanes next play at Mohawk at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
