ADAMS, Mass. -- Well, they say all good things must come to an end don't they?

The Hoosac Valley softball team certainly had plenty of good things going its way during an eight-game win streak to start the 2011

season. The Hurricanes had passed every test that came their way so far, including beating a previously undefeated Wahconah team just nine days ago. The Warriors returned the favor on Friday night, however, handing Hoosac its first loss of the season with a 4-0 win under the lights at Russell Field.

Wahconah senior Sam Burgner was dominant from the pitching circle, striking out 11 batters while allowing just three hits in a complete-game performance. The Hurricanes' offense, which was averaging 11 runs scored a game coming into Friday, was held scoreless for the first time all year.

"As always with Wahconah, the game was a battle," Hoosac head coach Morgan Shafer said. "Wahconah played well today, and Sam Burgner did a great job of keeping our bats quieter than usual. Our defense played well. We made three errors, but none of them produced any runs for them. They hit the ball hard today and just came up with more runs. As hard as we tried, we just couldn't answer back tonight."

Senior Sara Hamilton led the Warriors' attack with two RBI, while Shannon Lussier chipped in with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Sophomore Gabby Lavinio finished the scoring with an RBI triple in the seventh off Hurricanes starter Amanda Meczywor, who went the distance by allowing four earned runs on eight hits to drop her season record to 6-1. Meczywor struck out seven batters without a walk while also collecting one of Hoosac's three hits on the night. It was a double down the left-field line, the only hit of Hoosac's three in the game that left the infield.

The 'Canes next play at Mount Everett at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
