Everett Wins Marathon Battle Against Hoosac

SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- It was such a nice day out on Tuesday that the Hoosac Valley and Mount Everett softball teams decided to play three extra innings.

It took 10 innings in all to settle a pitchers' duel between the Hurricanes' Amanda Meczywor and the Eagles' Alicia Bazonski. In the end, Mount Everett hit a pair of singles in the bottom of the 10th inning to pull out a 1-0 victory at home. After starting the season 8-0, Morgan Shafer's club has now dropped its past two contests.

"We played 10 innings of errorless softball," Shafer said. "Today was a battle, and I am proud of what we did today. Mount Everett is a good team with a tough pitcher, and we just didn't get enough hits to give us the win. We played well defensively, and Amanda was tremendous today."

Meczywor, whose record dropped to 6-2 with the loss, went the distance more than usual on Tuesday, throwing all 10 innings for Hoosac. The senior captain scattered eight hits, struck out seven batters and intentionally walked just one batter. Bazonski was slightly better, recording eight strikouts and holding the Hurricanes scoreless in all six of the frames that they put runners on.

Both teams finished with eight hits in the game and no errors. Junior Sabrina Sommer led the Hoosac attack, going 3 for 4 in the game. Shafer also wanted to acknowledge the steady defense of Meczywor, who recored 17 outs in the game, including nine putouts, one pop fly and seven Ks. Freshman Kassandra Kazimierczak also made two great plays at third base.

The Hurricanes will try to regain their winning ways in a home game against Monument Mountain at 4:15 p.m on Wednesday.
