ADAMS, Mass. -- After a brief two-game losing streak, the Hoosac Valley softball team rediscovered its winning ways with a 7-3 win over Monument Mountain on Saturday. The Hurricanes were only up 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when Morgan Shafer's club broke out for five runs to put the game on ice.

Junior Tanelle Ciempa started the scoring with a bases-loaded walk before senior Katelynn Iacuessa plated two more runs with a double to left field. Iacuessa then scored on an RBI single by Carly Kondel, and Hoosac (9-2) got another run when the Spartans' second baseman bobbled a grounder by Tori Rumbolt.

Kondel ended up going 2 for 3 in the game, while junior Sabrina Sommer increased her team-leading .563 batting average by hitting 2 for 4 with a run scored in the first inning and an RBI single to center field in the second inning that helped the Hurricanes take a 2-1 lead. Senior Samantha Howe also collected two hits and scored a run in the game.

Senior captain Amanda Meczywor allowed three earned runs on eight hits to improve her season record to 7-2. She struck out four batters and walked just one, holding Monument in check until the Spartans put two runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning.

Hoosac next hosts Mount Greylock for a 4:15 p.m. game on Monday.
