Hoosac too sloppy in loss to Everett

ADAMS, Mass. -- Alicia Bazonski and Amanda Meczywor were as good as advertised in a pitchers' duel between two of the best hurlers in Berkshire County on Tuesday. Unfortunately the Hurricanes weren't as sharp as they normally are on defense, committing four errors that allowed the Eagles to score three unearned runs on their way to a 5-1 win on the road.

Celina Sinico's RBI single in the top of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie, and Everett scored another an insurance run on a fielder's choice later in the inning to improve its record to 10-6 and clinch a spot in the Division 3 Western Mass. tournament. The Eagles scored two more times in the seventh frame, sealing the victory for Bazonski, who struck out eight batters on her way to throwing a complete-game four-hitter.

Meczywor (8-5) was equally good in defeat, giving up two earned runs on five hits, striking out eight batters while allowing just one walk.

"It was a great pitchers' duel between Alicia and Amanda," Hoosac head coach Morgan Shafer said. "Amanda did a great job again for us today, but we made four errors, which led to three unearned runs. Mount Everett capatalized on them, and their defense made the plays to shut our bats down."

Meczywor was the only Hurricanes' batter with multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with her team's lone RBI in the game.

Hoosac, which fell to 11-5 with the loss, next plays at St. Joe's at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
