After a tough first season as head coach of the Mount Greylock softball team, head coach June Blake is hoping for big things for the Mounties this year. Greylock went just 5-13 in 2011, but Blake returns a majority of her lineup, including six of her seven top hitters from a season ago.
A valuable piece of the Mount Greylock softball team's puzzle over the past five years, Blake took over the varsity program last season after serving under long-time Mounties coach Phil Paul. Blake began her coaching career as an assistant coach at Western New England College in 2005. The following season she began a five-year run as the coach of the Mounties' junior varsity program.
Blake considers former Wahconah softball coach Ken Pease and current WNEC softball coach Lori Mayhew as her two biggest coaching influences. Pease taught her that "nothing is achieved without hard work and dedication" while she was a three-sport athlete at Wahconah in the late '90s. Blake then went on to play soccer and softball and college, where her Western New England team won a sectional title playing under Mayhew in her senior year.
Blake also coaches the Wahconah girls' basketball team, which won the Division 2 Western Mass. title last season. When she's not coaching, Blake spends her time working for the Wahconah Country Club in Dalton.
