PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Dayshaun Walton scored 19 points, and the Green Tech boys basketball team Wednesday jumped out to a 27-5 lead en route to an 84-52 victory over Pittsfield.
After weathering the early onslaught from the visiting Eagles, the Generals settled down and found their rhythm on offense.
Nick Brindle hit four 3-pointers on the way to a 14-point night, and Carter Mungin scored 15 points, all in the second half.
“I thought we left it all out there,” Pittsfield coach Mitchell Scace said. “Kids gave it their full effort, responded well to adversity early.
“I think we scratched and clawed and fought tough. But we just didn’t execute, didn’t take care of the ball and didn’t get the stops when we needed it.”
It was 13-5 early after a Kenneth Jackson putback midway through the first quarter. But the undefeated visitors from Albany, N.Y., mounted a 14-0 run that stretched into the second quarter.
It started with a putback by Zay Little (17 points), who got to the foul line to complete the three-point play, and it ended with another and-one, this time from Zhaji Williams, to make it a 22-point lead.
Pittsfield kept the deficit in that neighborhood until well into the third quarter.
A Bridle triple with a minute left in the third made it 58-38.
But Green Tech closed the third with six quick points to go ahead by 26 on a transition basket by Williams. And the Eagles outscored Pittsfield 20-14 in the fourth to finish with the 32-point win.
Although Pittsfield did not get the result it hoped for, Scace said there was value in facing the test from the Capital District power.
“It’s definitely good to get out there and compete, no matter who you’re playing against,” he said. “I think the kids learned that they can play with anybody as long as they show up.”
Pittsfield (4-8) goes to Taconic on Monday. Green Tech will host Taconic next Thursday in Albany.
