Sherman Leads Taconic Boys Past Monument Mountain

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Sam Sherman led five Taconic players in double figures Wednesday as the No. 1 seed in the Western Massachusetts Class B tournament pulled away late to earn a 67-48 win over Monument Mountain and a berth in Saturday’s regional final.
 
Taconic (16-4) heads to Westfield High to face Springfield International Charter School, which advanced on Wednesday with a 68-48 win over Wahconah.
 
Taconic led, 41-35, going to the fourth quarter Wednesday but outscored the Spartans, 26-13 in the final eight minutes to open up a big lead.
 
Tayvon Sandifer scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, going 4-for-4 at the foul line in the period.
 
Christian Maturevich scored 13, and Sean Harrigan and Maimoudou Bamba each had 10 in the win.
 
Monument Mountain got 16 points from Khalil Carlson and 13 apiece from Caden Gidarakos and Kenzel Chandler-Ellerbee.
 
The Spartans (14-6) learn this weekend when and where they will begin play in next week’s state tournament.
