DiGennaro, Foehl Named Athletes of the Week

In the immortal, often GIF-ed and "memed" words of former NFL coach Jim Mora, we're talking about playoffs.

This week's iBerkshires.com/Adams Community Bank Athletes of the Week made big impacts as their respective teams push for spots in the Western Massachusetts tournaments.

It was a grand week for girls basketball in Berkshire County as two local seniors joined the 1,000-point club for their careers on back-to-back nights.

Lexi Mercier, who did it on Thursday night, plays at Hoosac Valley, where the girls punched their tourney ticket way back on Jan. 26.

The Drury Blue Devils, on the other hand, went into Friday's game sitting on nine wins with four games left.

That made Brooke DiGennaro's 22 points more meaningful in a win over Pioneer Valley that sent Drury back to the sectional tournament.

On a personal level, a third-quarter free throw was especially meaningful for DiGennaro, who used it to score her 1,000th point.

For the season, she is averaging nearly 17 points per game with 2.5 points and 1.7 assists per night.

She and the Blue Devils will use their next three -- starting Thursday against Lee and ending with a crossover against a Berkshire County North Division opponent -- to try to improve their seed.

The Mount Greylock boys started the week looking to keep their hopes alive to get any seed.

And they ended it with those hopes in tact thanks largely to the performance of junior Toby Foehl.

On Tuesday, Foehl hit six 3-pointers and scored 26 points against Mount Everett on a night he said he shot better than any night this season.

He followed that up three nights later by again scoring 26 -- this time with eight 3s -- in a win over Lenox.

For the season, Foehl, who missed four games due to injury, is averaging 17 points per game.

This week's two victories left the Mounties at 6-10 with four games left. Mount Greylock continues the "one-and-done" phase of its season on Monday at home against Hoosac Valley.

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Adams Community Bank.
