As the winter season regular seasons enter their home stretch, this week's iBerkshires.com/Southwestern Vermont Health Care Athletes of the week are ready to make some noise in the post-season.

Pittsfield High School senior Kyle Cardoso has been a key to the success of the Generals' basketball team this winter, averaging more than 21 points per game for a team that sewed up a Division 3 State Tournament bid on Friday.

Cardoso made two 3-pointers to score Pittsfield's only overtime points in a dramatic, 63-60 win over Wahconah.

Those six points gave him a game-high 27 against the Berkshire County and Suburban North rivals from Dalton.

Hitting big shots late is nothing new for Cardoso, who started the season with a last-second basket for a two-point win against East Longmeadow in the Pioneer Valley Tip-Off Classic at UMass-Amherst.

The Generals have two games left in the regular season, both on the road: Tuesday at West Springfield and Thursday at Springfield International Charter School.

The county's downhill ski league also has two meets left in its regular season, starting Monday night at Bousquet Mountain.

Through the first four meets of the season, the Lenox Memorial girls are tied for first place in the league standings.

And Madison DiGrigoli has led the way each week, finishing first twice and second the other two weeks.

Last Monday in a slalom race in Pittsfield, DiGrigoli finished nearly 6.5 seconds ahead of the field for a commanding win.

After next week's season finale on Feb. 10,  the league's skiers take the holiday break before heading to Berkshire East on Feb. 25 for the state championship.

Last year at the state meet, DiGrigoli was the second fastest Berkshire County skier in the giant slalom, medaling with a fourth-place finish in the event.

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Southwestern Vermont Health Care.
