Drury Smothers Wahconah for Second Straight Win

NORTH ADAMS, Mass — On Tuesday, the Drury boys' basketball team won a big game on the road against Mount Greylock by putting in a little extra effort on the defensive end. The Blue Devils commitment to defense seems to have carried over in their next game against Wahconah on Friday, as Jack Racette's squad smothered the Warriors' offense on its way to a 44-19 win at Bucky Bullett Gymnasium.

Drury (6-5) won its second game in a row by practically shutting down Wahconah (1-10) in all but one quarter of play. The Blue Devils opened up the game by outscoring the visitors 10-2 in the first quarter. The Warriors showed some signs of life by scoring 12 points in the second quarter but still trailed 24-14 heading into halftime. Drury then put the game away by limiting Wahconah to just five total points in the entire second half.

"We did exactly what we wanted to do," Blue Devils head coach Jack Racette said. "I think it was a carryover from the Greylock game. Our guys are starting to commit to the defensive end. They realize now that we're not going to score a lot of points, but if we can keep teams down to a certain point, we can win games. Once you start winning a few games, it's easier for players to buy into playing hard on the defensive end."

Junior Nolan Bird was the only player in double figures for either team. The Drury forward had a nice all-around game with 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Slayter Aubin also came up with nine points and nine boards for the Blue Devils, who next host rival Hoosac Valley at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Collin Parrott led the Warriors offense by scoring seven points.
