GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. – Kenzel Chandler-Ellerbee scored a career-high 24 points, and the fourth-seeded Monument Mountain boys basketball team Monday pulled away in the second half to earn a 66-61 win over fifth-seeded Frontier in the quarter-finals of the Western Massachusetts Class B tournament.
The game was tied at half-time, and the Spartans trailed by one going to the fourth quarter.
“We got the lead and my guys were not going to give it up,” Monument Mountain coach Randy Koldys said.
“We played very good defense in the second half. We did a great job with our team defense giving up only 27 points. I was really proud of my guys, we were not always pretty but were definitely gritty.”
Joe Thomson scored 34 points for Frontier, including all 12 of its points in the fourth quarter.
Khalil Carlson scored 22, and Kyle Wellenkamp scored 10 for the Spartans.
Monument Mountain (14-5) goes to top-seeded Taconic on Wednesday in the semi-finals.
