Greylock Smothers Hoosac's Offense in Win

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass — The first time the Mount Greylock and Hoosac Valley boys' basketball teams met this season the game went right down to the wire before the Mounties pulled away for a five-point win on the road.

The second meeting wasn't nearly as close, however, as Greylock protected its home court with a smothering defense that allowed the Hurricanes to score just 20 points through the first three quarters of play. The Mounties had a firm 47-20 lead at that point and more than enough cushion to earn a 48-36 victory on Thursday night.

"It was a solid game for us, and our kids played good defense, which has been priority one for us all year long," Greylock head coach Bob Thistle said. "We have a big week coming up with Lenox and then Lee."

Led by sophomore Tyrell Thomas' game-high 13 points, the Mounties (11-3) jumped out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter and then increased their edge to 26-13 at the break. Junior center Tyler Picard added 10 points and six rebounds for Greylock, which seemed to let its foot off the break in the fourth quarter. Hoosac (1-14) outscored the hosts 16-1 in the fourth quarter but still couldn't avoid dropping its eighth straight game.

"There's not much to say here except it was just another humbling experience," Hurricanes head coach Bill Robinson said. "Greylock's defense just shut us down, made us one dimensional, and we just couldn't score. Kudos to Greylock and Coach Thistle. We wish them well in their quest for a Division 3 Western Mass. title."

Sophomore guard Sean Ryan-Kut was the lone bright spot for Hoosac, scoring 11 points on the night.

The Mounties next host Lenox at 7 p.m. on Monday night, while the Hurricanes don't return to action for two more weeks when they play at Taconic at 7:30 p.m. on February 16.
