SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Pope Francis girls basketball team handed Mount Everett a 53-47 defeat as the Eagles lost their third straight.

“Both teams came out flat to start the game,” Mount Everett coach Joshua King said. “I wish we had capitalized more on some of the early opportunities but once Pope Francis started knocking down shots the lead in the first half grew. We couldn't seem to find the bottom of the net in that first half, and we went into halftime down 22.”

Emma Goewey led Mount Everett with 23 points, and Emily Steuernagle and Julia Devoti added seven and six, respectively.

The Eagles (3-10) go to Lenox on Wednesday.

“We have a really important week coming up with Lenox, Renaissance, and Franklin Tech and if we want any outside chance of making the Western Mass or state tournaments we are going to have to start playing better basketball,” King said.
