NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Mount Everett girls basketball team defeated McCann Tech, 46-17, on Monday night.

The Hornets were short of three of their top players due to illness, including junior guard Cheyanne Alcombright.

“I have three girls sick and had no bench,” McCann coach Mike Dowling said. “Cheyanne would have been guarding [Gwendolyn] Carpenter, just as quick.”

Mount Everett got an early lead on McCann right from the first quarter. It was able to capitalize on McCann’s offensive turnovers and push the ball up the court and get those quick baskets down low; putting the score at 21-9 at half.

“We did what we’re going to try to do all year; we’re trying to be a pressure and run team,” Mount Everett coach Scott Rote said. “The good things about tonight were that when we did get settled up in our half court at times we were able to work the ball and make some things happen.”

“Our half-court offense hasn’t been the greatest this year yet,” Rote said. “We really play our best when we play fast.”

Mount Everett came out in the second half and continued to do exactly what it did in the first, although slowing it up a bit to work their offense and run through their plays.

The Eagles were able to hold the lead throughout, even with their young team. Rote said they only have two returning players from last year’s squad.

“It’s good to see the kids working hard, we’re very young.”

McCann is looking to get their whole team healthy and back to work, for their next game after the Holiday against Mohawk.

“I think with my whole squad, we’ve been working on quite a bit in practice,” Dowling said. “I got away from the actual calling of plays and we moved the ball fairly well, both in man and zone; we’re still a turnover machine, but once I get my whole bench back we’ll be okay.”

For Mount Everett, Carpenter finished with nine points and Hannah Herrick finished with a team high of 14 points. For McCann, Michaela Malloy had a team high of six points.

Mount Everett now 4-1 doesn’t play until Jan 7, when they will be facing the Hornets (2-2) again at home.
