PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield senior Peyton Steinman Thursday shot her way into the record books with 21 points to carry Pittsfield to a 49-36 win over Taconic.

Steinman scored 13 of her points in the second half including her first two to give her the Pittsfield High’s all-time leading girls basketball scorer.

Alexis Garvey added 13, while Bella Aitken had eight for the Generals (7-6)

For Taconic (5-7), Jasmine Rodriguez had 11 and Maddy Quinto chipped in with nine.

It was a record book type of day for Peyton Steinman and the Pittsfield Generals as she eclipsed 1,500 points. This record puts the senior behind only one player in Pittsfield High history, Sedale Jones, who scored 1,984 in his career.

“I’ve been a lucky man here with a lot of good players,” Pittsfield coach Joe Racicot said. “Peyton has been a blessing, the family is just a class act. She plays basketball all the time.”

It was a slow start for the Generals coming out the gates, but they were able to secure a 19-12 lead at the end of one quarter. Taconic really crashed the boards, getting multiple offensive rebounds to help keep it in the game. In the second quarter, both teams went back and forth trading hoops giving Pittsfield the seven-point lead they had in the first into the break.

Pittsfield got right to business in the second half starting on an 8-0 run including a few turnovers from full court pressure to give them some easy looks at the rim. From that point on Pittsfield controlled the game and were able to keep a double digit lead throughout most of the second half. Taconic started a 5-0 run themselves to start the fourth quarter, but Pittsfield proved to be too much at home as they would close the game out in easy fashion.

“We got away from moving the ball,” Racicot said. “You need to move the ball against that trap and in the zone. Once we started moving the ball it worked out pretty well.”

Pittsfield will take on Wahconah Monday night at home, While Taconic will go on the road to play Mount Greylock Tuesday.
